Idea: Amend the Washington State Democratic Party’s charter to give Young Democrats equal gender representation

Background: Young Democrats are the future of the Democratic Party, but YDs are currently allowed to send only one representative to the State Central Committee (SCC). The following charter amendment would give YDs equal gender representation on the SCC.

Language: The proposed amendment would add a new Section C to Article III, renumber subsequent sections, and strike subitem 7 of the existing Section C.

New Section C. Young Democratic Members. The SCC shall have two Young Democratic members: a state committeeman and a state committeewoman elected by the Young Democrats of Washington. Young Democratic Members shall be elected to terms of two years. Except in the election of officers and on the adoption or amendment of charter or Bylaws, Young Democratic Members shall have equal voice and vote as other members in affairs of the SCC.
